Weekend in Review

Well, we’ve officially got the first weekend under our belts. There was one major upset – A&M losing to Arkansas State – and a couple of disappointments – Baylor losing badly to Wake Forest and Texas Tech not scoring in triple digits against Eastern Washington. Other than that, everything basically went according to plan. A quick recap and a look ahead…

Oklahoma
Our own Mattradamus predicted the final outcome of this game about as accurately as you can (his prediction: 60-3, actual outcome: 57-2). That’s even more impressive considering the size of the margin. This week, OU welcomes a team that went 10-3 last year…in the Big East. Yawn.

Texas Tech
Tech opened the season with a “meh”-inducing performance against Eastern Washington. Sure, Graham Harrell had a staggering 536 passing yards, but Crabtree only finished with 73 and the defense gave up 24 points and 335 passing yards. Like I said. Meh. Next week, Tech travels to scenic Reno, Nevada (the “biggest little city in the World”) to take on the Nevada Wolfpack. Obviously, we’re terrified.

Texas
What more can I say that hasn’t already been said by the Captain and the longhaired gentleman with the nightmarish teeth? This past weekend, Texas manhandled Florida Atlantic 52-10. Wittle Coltie threw for 222 and ran for 103. He’s the second coming of Vince Young…except…uhhh…you know, white. And slow. And not all that athletic. Right.

Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State represented the Big XII South well this past weekend, going on the road and pasting Washington State 39-13. Uhhh…good job? I will say this: Oklahoma State may be better this year than anyone is predicting.

Texas A&M
Well, what can I say. The honeymoon has officially ended for Mike Sherman. His team turned the ball over four times and gave up 280 yards on the ground. To Arkansas State. The Ags are gonna have a tough time recovering from this one. But here’s some good news: A&M is favored by a whopping three points in their game against New Mexico this weekend!

Baylor
Not much to say here. Wake Forest beat Baylor. However, Baylor’s young QB, Robert Griffin, showed promise. And, uhhh…they’ve got Northwestern State this week. So there’s that.

This week’s games:
A relatively light weekend finds every Big XII South team favored (we can assume Baylor is favored to win, right? Right?!)

Cincinnati at Oklahoma (-21)
Texas (-26) at UTEP
Texas Tech (-10) at Nevada
Texas A&M (-3) at New Mexico
Houston at Oklahoma State (-13)
Northwestern State at Baylor (no line)

* I’m using the Sports Illustrated rankings because they’re the only ones who rank all 119 teams each week. And since we’re a Big XII South blog, we need to see if A&M really can fall below Baylor.

you use the sports illustrated rankings because they're the only ones that put tech in the top 10.
